About The Broughton Trust Website

The Broughton Trust was set up in 1999. It is a charity and company limited by guarantee. It has a board of fifteen members, eight who are residents and seven from organisations such as Social Landlords, Salford University and Salford Council. The Trust provides adult learning, youth work, employment support and community development across East Salford. Most of its employees and volunteers live locally.

Our Vision

The Trust's vision is of an East Salford where unemployment is no more than the regional average, where qualification and attainment levels are close to the norm for Greater Manchester, where there is a thriving community infrastructure promoting cohesion and inclusion, and where young people can access a range of formal and informal opportunities to help them develop, aspire and overcome obstacles to growth.

Our Objectives

From our 2010/11 Business Plan :

  1. To get more local people into paid employment
  2. To raise aspiration and participation in adult learning programmes
  3. To strengthen community infrastructure
  4. To create developmental and diversionary activities for young people

About East Salford

East Salford consists of three wards, Broughton, Kersal and Irwell Riverside. The population is around 40,000. They are generally less than a mile away from Manchester City Centre and Salford Precinct. It has experienced a range of regeneration initiatives and new housing developments but still contains some high levels of social and economic deprivation. Over 25% of the population is in receipt of benefits and family income levels are among the lowest in Salford. The area straddles the River Irwell and is adjacent to the University of Salford campus. It boasts the city's only co-operatively owned pub, The Star, and has links to film director Mike Leigh and folk singer Ewan McColl, both of whom lived and went to school locally.
